How to Get an Influencer’s Attention

Invites come across my desk every day to be a guest on podcasts, do JV webinars, etc.

I read them all, but not everyone gets a ‘yes’, and there is a myriad of factors that go into that.

One factor is whether or not I even recognize the name of the person asking me.

Despite having large followings, you’d be amazed at how much influencers are paying attention to their community members.

There are some people’s names that just keep coming up, and we notice. We notice those that invest in our business (financially and not) over and over again.

And often, it’s those folks that get a ‘yes’.

So what are some of the ways you can make yourself known – in a good way – before reaching out to an influencer for a collab, thereby increasing the chances they might say ‘yes’ to you?
  1. Join their email list, and reply each week to their newsletters.
  2. Join their free community / FB group, and contribute non-pitchy, value-filled content regularly.
    1. Also, be a source of knowledge for other community members. Answer their questions. Do you know how much it helps me when a community member of mine jumps in to direct a new member of my FB group to a resource before I can/have to? So helpful!
    2. Report spam posts in their group to help make it a better community.
  3. Follow them on all their social media platforms. Like and comment on their content.
  4. Share their content on your platforms, and tag them, so they know you’re sharing it.
    1. Also, engage in their content platforms. Comment on their blog posts and YouTube videos.
  5. Show up to their live webinars, and introduce yourself in the chatbox when they ask folks to in the beginning. Ask relevant questions. If you already purchased, talk in the chat about how excellent the product is, or how it helped you.
  6. Play the role of the connector. Introduce them to other valuable folks in your network where you know a specific win-win can be made.
  7. Get them good opportunities. “Hey Joe, Bill said he was looking for new podcast guests. His show is ranked #1 on iTunes, so I sent him your website to check out. Hopefully, he will be in touch with you soon.”
  8. Send them a thoughtful gift that stands out. See this post for more details.
  9. Buy their products. Move up the ranks in their value ladder. Join their VIP programs.
    1. …and give them testimonials! Preferably on video!
  10. Email them a copy of that selfie you took with them at an event with written permission for them to use it on their website.

In a nutshell:

  • Help their business grow.
  • Deliver value.
  • Make their job easier.
  • Be an asset and a helper, not a burden or obligation.
